ARTIST STATEMENT

Emily Smith is a designer-maker with an exploratory spirit. She experiments with different metals and techniques to craft wearable and decorative objects. Gathering inspiration from an amalgam of ideas intertwined with humanity, her current work revolves around finding the good when faced with bleakness.

ABOUT

The Metalsmith is owned, run, and made by Emily Smith.

Once upon a time in a small village in Hampshire, Emily somehow happened upon the path of creativity; it’s difficult to pinpoint a particular moment as the opportunities were always around. She grew up with many creative, and also supportive influences among family and friends. Days off school were usually spent making fantastically wondrous things.

She knew that she had wanted to go into jewellery and metalwork for some time, but the golden opportunity was waiting for her at university, UCA to be specific, so along the way lots of other skills were learned in textiles, art and beading.

There are no words to accurately describe Emily’s fascination with learning. In terms of working with metal: from forging to chasing and repousse, soldering to casting, she adores it all. Every moment spent in the workshop, manipulating materials, is a moment absolutely delighted in.

A Metalsmith piece can easily be yours; feel free to contact or visit an upcoming event.
